A total of 301 kilometres of Medium Voltage Covered Conductor (MVCC) main distribution lines have been completed across Sarawak at a total cost of RM189 million.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the MVCC system has improved the reliability and stability of electricity supply in affected areas.
The completed stretches include Petian to Dalat, Kanowit to Nanga Ngungun, Kanowit to Julau, Murum Junction to Belaga, Tatau to Sangan, Similajau to Sebauh, Bunut to Long Lama, and Kemantan to Pakan.
He said most power disruptions, particularly in rural areas, are caused by interference with uninsulated lines, including from animals, tree branches and lightning.
“As such, the ministry, through Sarawak Energy, has taken steps to upgrade these uninsulated lines to insulated MVCC lines in phases,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex today (May 18).
He said improvements to local distribution systems are being carried out through the construction of 18 new 11kV distribution lines costing RM12 million.
The projects cover areas including Ulu Paku, Ulu Layar, Spaoh, Matop, Bebangai, Pelawa-Putus and Betong town.
“These projects are at various stages of implementation and are expected to be completed by the end of the year,” he added.
Julaihi also said the Sarawak government has approved RM198 million to upgrade electricity supply in the Betong division.
The scope includes the construction of the Kabong/Roban 33/11kV substation, installation of a monopole line from Serudit to Saratok (about 45km), and MVCC lines from Serudit to Pusa (about 46km) and from Saratok to Simpang Kabong (about 37km).
