SARAWAK’S own airline, AirBorneo, is expected to begin initial jet operations connecting Kuching with Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Jakarta and Singapore by July next year.

According to the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the establishment of AirBorneo reflects Sarawak’s commitment to shaping its own development trajectory through stronger aviation connectivity and regional integration.

“For the initial jet operations, AirBorneo plans to begin targeted routes from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Jakarta and Singapore by July 2026,” he said during his winding-up speech at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting today (May 20).

Abang Johari added that AirBorneo was being developed in phases based on a long-term aviation blueprint for the state.

“Phase One will focus on consolidating Public Service Obligation operations to service rural routes within Sabah and Sarawak.

“In Phase Two, AirBorneo will expand into strategic domestic and regional commercial routes based on market demand and aircraft availability,” he added.

Abang Johari said AirBorneo represented more than just an aviation initiative, describing it as part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to strengthen economic connectivity and international engagement.

“AirBorneo embodies our commitment to shaping Sarawak’s own development trajectory.

“By empowering our aviation sector and connectivity network, we are building stronger bridges between Sarawak and international investors, while ensuring that our rakyat and industries are better connected to opportunities that lie beyond our borders,” he added.

Furthermore, he said the long-term vision for AirBorneo was to improve direct connectivity across Borneo and beyond.

“It is our vision to connect Sarawak to the major towns and cities of Borneo. Through direct air links, AirBorneo will improve accessibility for Sarawakians, investors and tourists, while creating new avenues for trade, investment and tourism,” he added.
