KUCHING: Two men were sentenced to a total of seven months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here on Tuesday (May 19) after pleading guilty to charges of assisting in disposing of stolen laptops belonging to two companies and an individual earlier this month.
In a separate case heard before Magistrate Leona Dominic Mojiliu, accused Mohd Firdaus Mohd Nazir, 29, and Franky Linggi, 30, were each sentenced to seven months in prison after admitting to a charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Code.
The charge stated that the duo had, on May 7 at about 1.27pm, at a computer shop near, 10th Mile Penrissen Road, voluntarily assisted in disposing of two stolen Dell laptops belonging to a quarry company.
The offence carries a punishment of imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
According to the case facts, the laptops were reported missing after a break-in at the company’s office at Mile 7 on May 6. The theft resulted in losses estimated at RM9,000.
Investigations later led police to Mohd Firdaus, who was arrested on May 13 in Jalan Stakan, Kota Sentosa, while Franky was detained five days later at the Central Police Station compound.
Police investigations further revealed that Mohd Firdaus had led investigators to the premises where the stolen laptops were sold.
Acting on the information, police recovered the two Dell laptops together with a sales receipt from the shop.
Meanwhile, in another proceeding before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan, the same duo were fined RM2,500 each, in default three months’ imprisonment, after pleading guilty to two additional charges under Section 414 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Code.
The first charge involved the disposal of an Acer laptop belonging to Mohamad Akmal Tan Abdullah, while the second charge concerned a Dell laptop belonging to a concrete supplier company.
The offences were committed at the same premises at the computer shop on May 5 and May 7 respectively.
Case facts stated that the laptops had been stolen from a laboratory room at a cement supplier along Jalan Old Airport on May 5, with total losses estimated at RM3,000.
Further investigations led police to recover the stolen items from the shop after the suspects allegedly admitted to selling the laptops there.
Both prosecutions were conducted by deputy public prosecutors Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani and Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly respectively. Both of the accused were unrepresented.
