KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here today for possessing 0.17 gramme of methamphetamine earlier this year.
Becker Blonde Gihoi, 23, pleaded guilty when the charge was read before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.
He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, which carries a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to five years upon conviction.
According to the charge sheet, Becker was found in possession of the drug at the roadside along Jalan BDC here at about 11:40 am on March 12.
Based on the facts of the case, police personnel detained the accused near Jalan BDC after suspecting him of being involved in drug-related activities.
A subsequent inspection uncovered a transparent straw packet containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu inside the accused’s sling bag.
The seized substance was later sent to the Department of Chemistry Malaysia for analysis, which confirmed it to be methamphetamine weighing 0.17 gramme.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly, prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented.
