KUCHING: Sarawak-based sibling music duo SJ Borneo has launched their latest original Gawai-themed song, “Gawai Kitai”, as a tribute to the festive celebration and Borneo’s rich cultural diversity.

The duo, comprising 16-year-old Shawn Thien and 13-year-old Jane Thien, continues to champion the integration of traditional Bornean elements into contemporary music through their latest release.

“Gawai Kitai” features a blend of Iban, Bidayuh and Mandarin lyrics, accompanied by traditional instruments such as the Sape and Djembe drums, creating a unique cross-cultural musical style synonymous with the group’s musical identity.

SJ Borneo said the song was produced to celebrate the spirit of Gawai while promoting Sarawak’s multicultural heritage to a wider audience.

“We hope this song can convey the spirit of Gawai and the joy of celebration to everyone, while allowing more people to experience the beauty of Borneo culture,” the duo said.

Beyond entertainment, the project also reflects the group’s efforts to preserve and modernise traditional music, while encouraging younger generations to appreciate and understand their cultural roots.

SJ Borneo has been actively promoting Borneo culture through performances and music productions on both local and international stages, showcasing Sarawak’s cultural identity through modern musical arrangements infused with ethnic elements.

“Gawai Kitai” is now available on major music and video streaming platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.
