SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch’s team members and engineers from the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) today visited Rumah Anne Saging longhouse at Pasai Siong here to witness the official handover of a newly completed parking area project funded under the Bawang Assan’s special Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) Fund.

Branch Chairman, Cr Kevin Lau Kor Jie, said he, along with his team and council engineers, had earlier visited the longhouse on January 23 this year to better understand the situation.

During a previous visit to attend a ‘Gawai Mangkung Tiang’ celebration held there, he said residents had raised concerns over the lack of proper parking facilities in the area, which had long caused traffic congestion and posed safety risks to both residents and visitors.

Following the feedback from residents, he said SRDC engineers later carried out a site inspection with the assistance of Cr Jeksen Chuban to assess the needs of the area and formulate an appropriate improvement plan.

He said after several months of implementation, the parking area project has now been successfully completed and officially handed over for public use.

Lau expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the project, noting that it was timely completed ahead of the Gawai Dayak celebrations in June.

He said the new parking facility would not only provide greater convenience for residents and visitors, but also allow the community to celebrate the upcoming festive season in a safer and more comfortable environment, while adding to the festive atmosphere and convenience within the longhouse community.

Thanking the SRDC, the relevant agencies, and the residents for their close cooperation in ensuring the smooth implementation of the project, Lau expressed hope that residents would continue working closely with the relevant authorities in maintaining public facilities so that the community could continue to benefit in the long term.

“My team would continue to monitor and follow up on the progress of various community development projects to ensure quality standards are met and to bring more comprehensive and sustainable development and convenience to local residents,” added Lau, who is also SUPP Youth chief.
