MIRI: A 50-year-old local man has been arrested for allegedly trespassing into the compound of a vacant house in Taman Wah Shin, Miri.
Police said the incident came to light after nearby residents noticed suspicious activity at the property at about 11 am on May 21 before alerting the authorities.
Police received a report on the incident at 1.21 pm the same day.
A police team dispatched to the location found the suspect still inside the fenced compound and detained him at the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that no valuables were stolen from the house.
Police said the suspect admitted entering the premises in search of items that could be sold.
Background checks also found that the man has several previous records related to criminal offences and drug abuse.
The suspect has been remanded for four days until May 26 to facilitate investigations under Section 447 of the Penal Code for criminal trespass.
The offence carries a penalty of up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM3,000, or both upon conviction.
Police also thanked members of the public for their swift action and cooperation in providing information that led to the arrest.
