KUCHING: A total of 95 citizenship applications under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution were tabled during the latest Special Committee on Citizenship Status meeting at the Sarawak level on Monday (May 25).

Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the applications were presented during the committee’s third meeting for 2026 held at the National Registration Department (NRD) building here.

She said the applications comprised 52 cases involving illegitimate children, 38 children under guardianship and five adopted children.

“The committee’s role is to verify applications, facilitate the application process and provide recommendations to the higher-level special committee,” she told reporters after chairing the meeting.

Fatimah stressed that the committee does not make final decisions on citizenship approvals, as all applications remain subject to existing federal laws, policies and mechanisms.

She revealed that from 2024 until May 25 this year, a total of 409 citizenship applications under Article 15A had been tabled at the state-level committee.

Of the total, 243 involved illegitimate children, 136 children under guardianship and 30 adopted children.

“Sarawak had conducted two committee meetings this month to ensure all pending applications at the state level could be processed and forwarded to Putrajaya without delay.”
