Man jailed seven months for meth possession

KUCHING: A 26-year-old man was sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here today for possessing methamphetamine.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali imposed the sentence on Basyhir Khan Ayub Khan after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.

The court ordered the jail term to run from the date of arrest on May 13.

According to the amended charge, the accused was found in possession of the prohibited substance at about 11.50 am on Mar 9 behind a house near Jalan Kampung Gita Lama here.

He was found holding a purple aluminium mint container containing a transparent plastic packet filled with crystal-like substances suspected to be methamphetamine.

The arrest was carried out by a police team from the Kuching district police headquarters (IPD Kuching) after the accused was identified and searched.

The seized substance was later sent to the Chemistry Department here for analysis.

A chemical report confirmed that the exhibit contained 0.11g of methamphetamine, which is listed under the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan appeared for the prosecution. The accused was unrepresented.
