MIRI: Swift action by residents helped prevent a bedroom fire from escalating into a major incident at a flat in Bandar Baru Permai Jaya here early this morning.

Personnel from Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Lutong were alerted about the fire that broke out at Lot 6282, Flat Lorong 2, around 1.08am.

A Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) Scania carrying five firefighters was immediately deployed to the scene, arriving about 13 minutes later.

Upon arrival, firefighters found that the blaze, which had started in a bedroom measuring approximately eight by four feet, had already been brought under control by the occupants themselves.

The fire damaged about 10 per cent of the room and spread to a wardrobe before it was successfully extinguished.

Operation commander PBK II (KUP) Awang Arizal said firefighters carried out a thorough inspection and monitoring operation to ensure there were no remaining hotspots or risk of the fire reigniting.

“The situation was confirmed safe before the team concluded operations and returned to the station,” he said.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The operation, which ended shortly after 2am, also involved assistance from Royal Malaysia Police personnel and officers from Sarawak Energy Berhad.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
