SARIKEI: The state government has set aside RM120 million to implement various infrastructure projects in the Parit Bugis area of Seberang Sarikei.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the projects are expected to improve the quality of life of local residents while stimulating economic growth in the area.
He said infrastructure development remains one of the government’s key priorities to ensure that rural communities also enjoy balanced access to facilities and development opportunities.
“The government has always given attention to the needs of rural communities so that they too can enjoy facilities and development opportunities that are on par with other areas,” he said at the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Project Implementation Cheque Presentation Ceremony held at the Sarawak Integrated Administration Centre (IAC) here recently.
Len said rural areas have strong potential for continued growth if supported by a more organised and efficient road network and support systems.
He added that of the total allocation, RM45 million has been channelled through the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA) for the construction of new road networks in the affected areas.
He said the construction of these roads would not only improve connectivity between villages but also facilitate the movement of residents and provide faster access to agricultural areas and economic activity centres.
In addition, a further RM75 million has been allocated to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to implement bund road projects, which will also strengthen drainage and irrigation systems in the area.
He added that the project is expected to bring long-term benefits, including improved safety levels, easier daily movement for residents, and the encouragement of growth in the local agricultural sector.
“When basic facilities are improved, residents will have better access, and this will indirectly contribute to raising the community’s standard of living,” he said.
