MIRI: A 49-year-old local man was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here on Tuesday after pleading guilty to criminal trespass involving a vacant house in Taman Wah Shin.

The incident occurred at about 11pm on May 21 when a neighbour noticed the man behaving suspiciously and loitering within the compound of the unoccupied property.

Concerned by the unusual activity, the neighbour alerted police, prompting officers to rush to the scene where the suspect was subsequently detained.

Police investigations later led to the man being charged in court.

Prior to the hearing, Magistrate Sandy Yvett Freddy granted a four-day remand order to facilitate investigations before the case was brought before the court on Tuesday.

Following the conviction, Miri police urged residents to remain vigilant over the safety of their homes and neighbourhoods, especially with the festive season approaching.

Members of the public were also encouraged to channel information relating to suspicious or criminal activities to the Miri district police headquarters or the nearest police station.

Police said public cooperation remains crucial in ensuring community safety and maintaining public order.
