KUCHING: Surau Wakaf Taman Indah in Bandar Baru Samariang carried out korban involving 35 cows in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha this year, with more than 100 volunteers assisting in the programme.

Surau chairman Yahya Saruji said 20 cows were slaughtered on the tirst day of Aidiladha, while the remaining 15 would be slaughtered this Saturday (May 30).

“Last year, we managed to secure 33 cows. This year, it has increased to 35. So next year, it may increase further. Every year, the number keeps growing,” he said when met here today (May 27).

Yahya said the surau changed its name from Surau Taman Indah to Surau Wakaf Taman Indah in 2017 after receiving numerous waqf contributions from the public during its construction phase.

He said contributions included construction materials such as stones and cement from anonymous donors.

“Because we received so many waqf contributions, we decided to change the name of the surau as a way of appreciating the community’s contributions,” he explained.

He added that the surau was first used for prayers on the first day of Ramadan in 2017 and continues to grow with the support of the local community.

He said although the surau only has around 10 permanent committee members, this year’s korban programme was assisted by more than 100 volunteers who came together in the spirit of gotong-royong.

“Most of those who came were volunteers. They came to help without expecting anything in return,” he said.

He added that the surau was first used for prayers on the first day of Ramadan in 2017 and has continued to develop with support from the local community.

Although the surau only has around 10 permanent committee members, Yahya said the korban programme received strong public participation through volunteer support.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol described the commitment and cooperation shown by the surau committee as commendable.

He said he was particularly impressed that all members of the surau committee were youths.
