Foreign woman arrested in prostitution raid

KUCHING: Police arrested a 34-year-old foreign woman suspected of offering prostitution services through a chat application during an Ops Noda raid at a lodging premises along Jalan Stutong here yesterday (May 26).

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the raid was conducted at about 1.08 pm by personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK).

“Among the items confiscated were a mobile phone, condoms and other related materials to assist investigations.

“Initial investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly used the Michat application to advertise prostitution services and solicit customers,” he said in a statement today (May 27).

Alexson said the woman is believed to have been involved in the activity for about two months, charging between RM180 and RM250 for each service.

The case is being investigated under Section 372(1)(e) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail sentence of up to 15 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.

The suspect is also being investigated under Section 6(1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for allegedly failing to produce valid travel documents or passes to remain in Malaysia.

If convicted, the offence carries a fine of up to RM10,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both, as well as whipping.

Alexson said police would continue intensifying enforcement operations against immoral and unlawful activities to safeguard public order and safety.
