KUCHING: A Chinese seafarer who suffered a wrist injury while working aboard a cargo vessel off Tanjung Po was safely brought ashore in a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation yesterday (May 31).

The 36-year-old crewman was injured aboard the CX GEMMA, a Marshall Islands-registered bulk carrier operating about 7.5 nautical miles north of Tanjung Po at the time of the incident.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak director First Admiral Mohd Khairi Abd Aziz said the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Kuching received a request for assistance from the vessel’s agent, who sought an urgent medical evacuation for the injured crewman.

Following the distress call at 11.40am, the agency deployed its patrol boat KILAT 35 to the vessel’s location.

“The asset was dispatched immediately and successfully came alongside CX GEMMA to carry out the transfer operation safely.

“The victim was subsequently escorted to the KOMTAS Jetty, where he was handed over to the ship’s agent before being taken to Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) for further treatment,” he said.

Mohd Khairi said the successful operation reflected MMEA’s continued readiness to respond to emergencies at sea and ensure the safety and welfare of maritime personnel operating in the state’s waters.

The maritime community and the public are reminded to prioritise safety while at sea and to promptly report any emergencies to the MMEA Sarawak Operations Centre at 082-432544 to enable immediate assistance.
