KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has left the question of his political future in the hands of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg amid speculation that he may retire in the next state election.

Responding to reporters at the Gawai Dayak 2026 Open House at the UNIFOR Complex, Uggah declined to comment directly on rumours surrounding his retirement, saying the matter would be determined by the Premier in his capacity as Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president.

“I don’t have any comments. I leave it to the Premier, who is also the President of PBB. He has the wisdom to determine whether a leader should retire or continue serving,” he said.

While refraining from addressing the speculation directly, Uggah acknowledged that leadership renewal is a natural part of the political process.

He pointed out that every generation of leaders eventually reaches a point where it must make way for new leadership, particularly as changing circumstances and technological advancements continue to reshape the demands of governance.

“We have seen this tradition in Sarawak. Leaders come and go because we are getting older.

“We may run out of ideas and may not be able to keep up with technology. So, I leave it to the Premier to decide,” he said.

The Bukit Saban assemblyman, one of Sarawak’s longest-serving political leaders, did not indicate whether he intends to defend his seat in the next state election.

Uggah has held various senior positions in both the state government and PBB over the years, playing a key role in rural development and agricultural transformation initiatives across Sarawak.
