KUCHING: The spirit of unity and harmony among Sarawak’s diverse communities continues to be one of the state’s greatest strengths and a key factor behind its continued progress.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said Sarawak’s long-standing tradition of mutual respect and understanding among people of different races and religions has created a stable environment that allows the state to focus on development and economic growth.
He said the presence of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Gawai Dayak 2026 Open House celebration reflected the close relationship between the state leadership and the people.
“We are honoured by the presence of the Premier today. He spent more than an hour with us and that shows he is truly a leader of the people. It is a great honour, especially for the Dayak community,” he said when met by reporters at the open house here today (June 1).
Uggah said the open house provided an opportunity to showcase various aspects of Dayak culture and traditions, including traditional music, dances and musical instruments that are rarely seen by the public.
He said such efforts play an important role in preserving Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage while promoting greater understanding among the state’s multicultural population.
Throughout the ongoing Gawai celebrations, he said the Dayak community has continued to showcase its customs and traditions as part of its contribution towards building a peaceful, united and harmonious Sarawak.
“The message we want to convey is to work together, remain united and continue contributing towards the development of Sarawak,” he said.
Uggah also highlighted the uniquely Sarawakian tradition of ngabang, describing it as a symbol of the state’s strong culture of inclusivity and mutual respect.
He said the practice of visiting friends and neighbours during festive occasions transcends ethnic and religious boundaries, whether during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Wesak Day, Gawai Dayak or Hari Raya Aidiladha.
“Whatever the celebration may be, it is celebrated by people of all races. This reflects the harmony that we enjoy in Sarawak,” he said.
At the same time, Uggah said preparations are underway for the State-level Gawai Dayak celebration which will be held on June 21.
The celebration will be preceded by the Niti Daun procession on June 20, which is expected to feature participants from various Dayak communities across the state.
The festivities will culminate with the State Gawai Dinner, bringing together community leaders, government representatives and guests from across Sarawak in celebration of the harvest festival.
“The State-level Gawai celebration is expected to be attended by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and the Premier,” he said.
