MIRI: Police arrested three men on suspected drug-related offences and issued 63 traffic summonses during a large-scale crime prevention operation conducted across Miri in conjunction with the Hari Gawai celebrations.

The operation, involving 46 police personnel, was carried out overnight on Sunday and included roadblocks, snap checks, mobile patrols and inspections of entertainment outlets.

Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to maintain public order and enhance security during the festive season.

Roadblocks set up at several locations around the district uncovered a range of traffic violations, resulting in 63 summonses being issued.

Among the offences detected were driving without a licence, illegal vehicle modifications, the absence of side mirrors, modified exhaust systems, the use of non-compliant registration plates and expired road tax.

Police patrol teams also conducted checks in residential areas, villages and along major roads under the force’s omnipresence strategy, aimed at deterring criminal activity and reassuring the public through increased police visibility.

Entertainment outlets were also inspected during the operation, with officers carrying out urine screening tests on selected individuals.

The operation led to the arrest of three adult men for alleged narcotics offences.

Mohd Farhan said police would continue to conduct similar operations throughout the Hari Gawai festive period and during other major celebrations to combat crime and strengthen public safety.

“We remain committed to ensuring that communities can celebrate in a safe and secure environment,” he said.

The operation began at 11pm following a deployment briefing attended by officers and personnel involved in the enforcement activities.
