SIBU: Development must continue not only in the towns but also in the rural areas.
Stating this, Bawang Assan assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said basic infrastructures such as roads, water supply, electricity, internet connectivity, education and healthcare services are important for improving the quality of life of the people.
“I will continue to raise the needs and aspirations of the people whenever and wherever necessary.
“At the same time, I hope our younger generation will continue to value education, discipline, hard work and good moral values. Education remains the key to a better future.
“While embracing modern development, we must also continue to preserve our Dayak culture, traditions, language, and customs as part of our rich heritage,” he said at the Hari Ngabang Gawai held at Rumah Bujang Ujeh, Sungai Pasai here on Tuesday.
Wong, who is also Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice president said he was pleased to see the strong cooperation among the people at the longhouse.
The success of this celebration, he noted, reflects the spirit of gotong-royong and mutual respect which has always been the strength of the longhouse communities.
This spirit must continue to be preserved and passed on to the younger generation, he said, adding Gawai Dayak is a reminder to be thankful for the blessings received throughout the year, and at the same time strengthens the spirit of “Segulai Sejalai” — walking together in unity and harmony.
“As we celebrate Gawai, let us also remember the importance of maintaining peace, unity and racial harmony in Sarawak. Our state is blessed because people of different races, religions and backgrounds can live together peacefully, respecting one another like one big family. This is something very special that we must continue to protect.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the community leaders, especially the Tuai Rumah and the village committees, for always working closely with the elected representatives and government agencies in bringing development and assistance to the people.
“Your cooperation and understanding are very important for the progress of the rural areas,” he said.
