MIRI: The long-awaited expansion of the Miri Airport terminal has finally received approval, with the project set to be implemented at a cost of RM445 million, marking a major boost for tourism, trade and economic development in northern Sarawak.
Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the project would significantly strengthen Miri’s role as the main tourism gateway to northern Sarawak while supporting the state’s broader economic growth agenda.
“This project is crucial in strengthening Miri’s position as the main tourism gateway to northern Sarawak while supporting the state’s economic growth,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters during a Hari Gawai open house at the residence of former Miri City Council (MCC) councillor Kijan Toynbee on Wednesday (Jun 3) as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
In a related development, Lee revealed that the additional lane dedicated to Malaysian vehicles at the Sungai Tujoh Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex, funded by the state government with a cost of RM4 million, has been completed and is now operational.
He said the separate lane system for Malaysian and Bruneian vehicles has helped ease congestion, resulting in significantly fewer complaints from road users during this year’s Gawai celebrations compared to previous years.
Lee, who is also the Senadin assemblyman, expressed his appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving several major infrastructure projects that are expected to drive economic growth in Miri and the northern regions of the state.
“Among the key projects is the ongoing Kuala Baram deepening project, which will allow vessels of up to 5,000 tonnes to berth directly at Miri Port upon completion of its first phase,” he said.
Lee said the second phase of the project will further extend the navigation channel towards the open sea, paving the way for the development of Miri Port into a deep-sea port capable of enhancing trade and tourism activities.
“Once these facilities are fully completed, international cruise ships will have the potential to berth in Miri, bringing more tourists to visit various attractions such as Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah National Park,” he said.
Lee added that the projects reflect the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to strengthening connectivity and economic opportunities in the northern region while positioning Miri as a key tourism and logistics hub.
