SERIAN: The growing popularity of the Birarak Gawai Taee Parade has prompted calls for a dedicated and well-equipped venue to support the continued growth of the annual cultural event.
Taee Village Chief, Prisca Agin said the parade has expanded significantly over the years, attracting increasing numbers of participants and visitors.
She said the existing space is no longer adequate to accommodate the growing crowd attending the annual celebration.
“As such, the villagers sincerely hope that a dedicated, comfortable and well-organised venue with adequate facilities can be developed in the future to host the event.
“Such facilities would not only provide greater comfort for visitors and residents, but would also serve as a symbol of recognition for the community’s efforts in preserving its heritage and strengthening community unity for more than five decades.
“We believe that with the support and attention of leaders and relevant agencies, this aspiration can be realised for the benefit of future generations and the overall development of Kampung Taee here,” she said.
She mentioned this in her speech during the Birarak Gawai Taee Parade 2026 officiated by Serian MP Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem at SK St John, Kampung Taee here on Gawai Day (June 1).
Prisca added this year’s theme, “Sepakat Menangkap Adat”, signifies unity in upholding and preserving customs and culture.
“The theme reflects the spirit of the Kampung Taee community, which continues to work together to ensure its customs, culture and heritage remain preserved and appreciated by future generations.”
“The celebration serves as an effective platform for fostering unity through activities that encourage cooperation, mutual respect and appreciation of diversity.
“At the same time, we remain open to welcoming visitors and hearing the views of outsiders who wish to learn about and appreciate the culture of the Bidayuh community,” she said.
Their dedication and cooperation has helped preserve local customs and culture while strengthening unity and attracting support from various parties.
For the record, the two-day celebration, held on May 31 and June 1, featured a range of cultural and community-based activities, including the Birarak Gawai Ta-ee Parade, decorated floats, cultural performances, traditional music and dance, community activities and an open house.
One of the highlights was the five-kilometre parade involving participants from Proton, Baluh Tuda, Danu Kali, Sibago, Taan, Sungai Angkam, Tipen Langgir, Batang Babai and Baran zones.
