KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has hinted that the upcoming Sarawak State Election (PRN) could be held in less than 100 days.

In view of this, he urged party members to intensify preparations for the election and play their respective roles in ensuring that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition retains its mandate to continue developing the state and safeguarding the rights and interests of Sarawakians.

“We are in a battle now. I think it is less than 100 days away from today.

“So we really need to start moving immediately,” he said when addressing the flag-raising ceremony held in conjunction with SUPP’s 67th anniversary celebration at the party headquarters here yesterday (June 4) according to a news report by TVS.

Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak’s Deputy Premier, said the current situation requires thorough preparation, as challenges ahead would be difficult to overcome without sufficient planning and action.

He also reminded party members not to underestimate their opponents or become overly confident ahead of the election.

“The closer we get to the election, the stronger the effort and commitment that must be demonstrated,” he said.

Dr Sim said every party member must continue the spirit of SUPP’s founding leaders by engaging with the people, reaching out at the grassroots level and introducing the party’s policies to gain public support.

He said the struggle faced by the party is not merely about contesting an election, but about securing Sarawak’s future.

At the same time, he also said that as a long-established local party, SUPP has continued to play an important role in the state’s development, from the anti-colonial era to the present day.

“One of the most important things is that we remain within the mainstream of Sarawak politics. Being in the mainstream means we are directly involved in formulating and implementing various policies until they become reality,” he said.

Dr Sim said SUPP is also proud of its contributions to many of Sarawak’s achievements, including the Sri Aman Peace Agreement that ended the communist insurgency and the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), which has been accepted in Sarawak for more than a decade.

Meanwhile, he said politics in Sarawak continues to focus on the state’s development agenda, made possible through the support of the people who reject divisive politics, polarisation and conflict.

He said GPS’ stability stems from the close cooperation among its component parties, a relationship that has existed since the 1970s and remains strong today.

“Allthough differences of opinion have arisen over more than five decades of cooperation, issues have always been resolved through trust and mutual understanding, which form the foundation of Sarawak’s political stability and prosperity,” he said.

Dr Sim also stressed that politics is not merely about systems or power, but about values that can help build a better society.

“Good politics should cultivate positive values within society, not spread division and negative influences,” he said.
