KUCHING: Residents are being encouraged to turn household waste into cash this month as Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) rolls out a series of recycling and used cooking oil buyback campaigns aimed at reducing environmental pollution.
The initiatives, announced through DBKU’s Facebook page, will allow the public to exchange recyclable materials and used cooking oil for cash while supporting sustainable waste management practices.
Under the programme, residents can sell items such as paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminium, scrap metal, electrical and electronic waste, car batteries and used cooking oil at designated collection points throughout June.
DBKU’s Used Cooking Oil Buyback Programme will be held from 8 am to noon on Jun 7, 14, 21 and 28 at selected locations, including Jalan Depo, Bandar Baru Samariang, Taman Sukma and Metrocity.
The local authority will also organise its 3R Buyback Campaign and Compost Sale on Jun 13, 20 and 27 at SK Rakyat Tupong, Masjid Al-Hakim in Kampung Muda Hashim, and Darul Hana.
According to the rates shared by DBKU, aluminium will be purchased at RM4 per kilogramme, used cooking oil at RM2.50 per kilogramme and car batteries at RM2 per kilogramme.
Compost will also be available for purchase during the campaign at RM1 per kilogramme or RM5 for five kilogrammes.
The programmes form part of DBKU’s ongoing efforts to encourage residents to adopt the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle (3R) while preventing recyclable materials and used cooking oil from being improperly discarded.
Members of the public are advised to arrive early as collection sites may close once collection lorries reach full capacity. The campaigns may also be cancelled in the event of heavy rain or thunderstorms.
