SIBU: Progress and development of an area can only be achieved when the people and leaders work together in a spirit of cooperation, understanding and mutual respect.
Bawang Assan assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said that the success of a community does not only depend on the government’s development planning, but also requires the support and active involvement of the local community in ensuring that every effort implemented can benefit the people.
“The spirit of togetherness that the longhouse community has been practicing for so long is an important foundation in building a harmonious and progressive community.
“Progress can only be achieved when the people and leaders work together in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect. With strong unity and understanding, more development and assistance can be channelled for the wellbeing of the community,” he said at the Ngiling Bidai (Closing of the Gawai Dayak Celebration Season) Ceremony held at Rumah Dieo Kanyan, Tanjung Penasu, near here on Thursday.
Wong, who is also Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice president, also stressed his commitment to continue to work with community leaders, longhouse and village chiefs, youth leaders and related agencies to bring more development and opportunities to the residents, especially in rural areas.
He said that rural communities deserve to enjoy better facilities, including quality roads, wider internet access, efficient health services and better educational opportunities for the younger generation.
At the same time, he reminded the community to continue preserving the values of unity and the spirit of Segulai Sejalai, which had been the core strength of the Dayak community for so long.
According to him, these values not only reflect a culture of mutual help and cooperation, but also serve as a catalyst for the development of a more sustainable and resilient community.
Commenting on the Ngiling Bidai celebration, Wong said that the tradition passed down from generation to generation was not just a cultural event, but also a platform to strengthen relationships, strengthen unity and express gratitude for all the blessings received.
He also praised the efforts of the younger generation who continue to appreciate and preserve the cultural heritage and customs of the Dayak community despite the currents of modernisation and changing times.
“Culture is the identity and soul of a nation. If we continue to preserve and practice the inherited traditions, our identity as the Dayak community and the people of Sarawak will continue to remain intact for future generations,” he said.
Wong also called on all Sarawakians to continue to maintain harmony, unity and mutual respect between races and religions to ensure the stability and progress of the state can be maintained.
Also present was the political secretary to the Premier, Joshua Ting Fu Ying and Tuai Rumah Dieo Kanyan.
