SIBU: Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, has called on longhouse residents to continue strengthening unity and cooperation to ensure their communities remain safe, harmonious and comfortable places to live.

Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman, said the true strength of a longhouse lies not only in its physical structure but also in the spirit of togetherness and mutual respect among its residents.

He stressed that maintaining a peaceful and secure living environment requires the active participation of every community member.

“Through collective efforts and a strong sense of responsibility, residents can overcome challenges, safeguard the wellbeing of their families and preserve the unique cultural heritage of the longhouse community,” he said during his recent Gawai Dayak visit to Rumah Andrew Patrick Gundai, Sg Assan near here.

Tiong, who is also Progressive Democratice Party (PDP) president, was on his round of Gawai visits to 12 longhouses in his constituency embarked on from June 3 to 5.

PDP treasurer-general, Datuk Teo Boon Siew who is also PDP Dudong Division chairman, Penghulu Martenus Nyuram and Tuai Rumah Andrew Patrick Gundai were among those present.

Tiong noted that activities such as gotong-royong, maintenance works, safety programmes and cultural celebrations help strengthen relationships among residents while fostering a sense of shared responsibility.

He said a strong spirit of cooperation is crucial in ensuring that development plans and community programmes can be implemented smoothly and effectively.

“Whether it involves upgrading infrastructure, improving public facilities or organising community activities, cooperation remains the foundation of success,” he added.

He also reminded residents that development is a collective effort and not solely the responsibility of community leaders or government agencies.

He urged longhouse communities to continue nurturing the values of unity, mutual assistance and communal living, while encouraging younger generations to uphold these traditions.
