KUCHING: The possibility of an early Sarawak State Election (PRN) is seen as potentially advantageous to the ruling coalition, given its stronger ground machinery and organisational strength.
Political analyst from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Prof Madya Dr Romzi Ationg said an election held within the next 100 days could benefit the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) due to its incumbency, organisational strength, stable leadership, and ongoing development agenda.
He added that these advantages contrast with opposition parties, which continue to face challenges in mobilising resources and unifying support.
“There are already signs that Sarawak may be entering an informal “election mode”.
“This points to increased political messaging, more active grassroots engagement, public statements encouraging readiness, and growing speculation over possible election timing,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted.
On party preparedness, he added that the ruling coalition, GPS, appears relatively well-positioned through its established grassroots networks and governance visibility.
“Opposition parties remain active but generally face greater challenges regarding machinery coordination, candidate positioning, and voter outreach,” he added.
He also said that recent developments, including progress on Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) related matters, economic diversification efforts, and investments in digital and energy sectors, alongside perceptions of political stability, could influence the timing of the state election.
He also noted that perceptions of political stability and current voter sentiment, which appears to lean towards continuity particularly among voters prioritising stability and development.
“Nevertheless, opposition campaigns may focus on accountability, governance improvements, and alternative policy proposals,” he said.
