SUNGAI PETANI: The Magistrates’ Court here today rejected a remand application by police against the lorry driver involved in a crash that claimed six lives in Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal yesterday.
Magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri allowed the 49-year-old man to be released today following his arrest immediately after the incident.
Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said yesterday that the man was being detained for investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
He also said the man tested negative for drugs, while checks found that he had seven summonses, with four still unsettled.
Adzli said that the man had a valid driving licence and was driving the lorry at 60 kilometres per hour at the time of the incident.
In the 3.50pm incident, a family of six, including a baby, died while a three-year-old girl was seriously injured.
All the victims were travelling in a Proton X50 sports utility vehicle which collided with a soil-laden lorry while travelling from Penang to Merbok, here. – BERNAMA
