KUCHING: Sarawak’s women’s volleyball team were crowned champions at the 66th Malaysia National Open Volleyball Championship after an impressive campaign in Johor Bahru.

The tournament, held at Larkin Arena from May 30 to June 2, saw Sarawak combine experienced campaigners and emerging talents to secure the national title.
The triumph was further underlined by a string of individual honours, including senior player Stephanie Law being named Best Libero.
While grateful for the recognition, Law said the team title meant more to her than any personal accolade.
“Winning Best Libero was definitely an honour, and I’m very grateful for the recognition. But honestly, the championship means much more to me.
“Volleyball has always been a team sport. Individual awards are nice, but seeing our team stand together on the top of the podium is what makes me happiest,” she told Sarawak Tribune.
Law noted that the squad comprised players from different backgrounds, with some working, some studying and others returning to competitive volleyball after a period away from the sport.
“Whenever Sarawak needed us, everyone answered the call. At this stage of my volleyball career, I value team success more than personal achievements.
“The Best Libero award is something I’ll treasure, but bringing home the gold medal for Sarawak is the memory that will stay with me the longest,” she added.
As one of the squad’s senior members, Law also urged younger players to appreciate every opportunity to wear the Sarawak jersey.
“As seniors, our job is not only to win matches but also to set an example. One day, this team will belong to them, so we hope they learn as much as they can from every experience,” she said.
Sarawak’s success was also reflected in the individual awards, with Joan Ling Yu Yian winning both Best Outside Hitter and Most Valuable Player. Angela Tang Ling Hui was named Best Middle Blocker, Moh Sheau Jun Best Setter, while Sanong Kulchim received the Best Coach award.
The title was a fitting reward for the Sarawak women’s team, reflecting the squad’s unity, experience and determination throughout the tournament.
