KUCHING: Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) remains committed to strengthening the status of the Malay language while nurturing future generations through programmes that develop communication skills, critical thinking and leadership.
Its Director-General, Datuk Dr Hazami Jahari, said the institution’s mission to uphold the national language has remained relevant after seven decades of service.
He said this in a speech delivered by DBP Sarawak’s Director, Dr Azizul Ismail, at the MADANI Youth Forum Competition for the Tuan Yang Terutama Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Challenge Trophy 2026 at Balai Budaya, DBP Sarawak here today.
Hazami said DBP recently celebrated its 70th anniversary on June 22, marking seven decades of promoting and strengthening the Malay language and literature despite evolving challenges.
“A period of 70 years is a remarkable achievement and proves that DBP remains an important and relevant institution in addressing contemporary challenges, particularly in upholding and strengthening our national language,” he said.
He said that the effort was made possible through the continued support of the Sarawak Government, educational institutions, and various agencies that have contributed ideas, expertise and resources to strengthen the use of the national language in the state.
Hazami said the youth forum competition, first introduced in Peninsular Malaysia in 1989 before expanding to Sarawak in 1990, has become an important platform for identifying and nurturing students with strong communication and public speaking abilities.
“This is the only competition in the country that enjoys the full patronage of a Head of State, and we deeply appreciate the continuous support and encouragement from His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak,” he said.
He said this year’s competition attracted 50 teams from schools across Sarawak, with only the top five teams advancing to the state finals.
The state champion will represent Sarawak at the 2026 National MADANI Youth Forum Competition, where the state hopes to secure the national title.
Hazami also expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Government, the Sarawak State Education Department, and other collaborating agencies for their continued commitment to ensuring the success of the competition and the broader effort to uphold the Malay language.
