KUCHING: The strong performance of the direct Guangzhou-Kuching flight service reflects growing tourism and business links between Sarawak and China, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
He said the encouraging passenger numbers demonstrate rising demand for direct connectivity and underscore the role of air links in supporting tourism, trade and investment.
Speaking after receiving a courtesy call from Baohang International chief executive officer (CEO) Brandon Zhu at Bangunan Baitulmakmur on Monday (June 8), Lee welcomed private sector efforts to expand Sarawak’s international air network.
“I welcome the initiative by the private sector in opening and promoting direct international routes to Sarawak.
“Such services benefit travellers, support tourism growth and facilitate business exchanges and economic cooperation,” he said.
According to Baohang International, the Guangzhou to Kuching route operated by Batik Air has carried 5,892 passengers on 22 return flights since its launch on Mar 17, recording an average load factor of 85 per cent.
About 40 per cent of passengers travelled in organised tour groups, while the remainder were independent travellers and online bookings.
The route has also handled 44 tonnes of cargo since operations began.
Lee noted that China remains one of Sarawak’s key economic partners, with growing involvement in renewable energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, logistics and technology.
During the meeting, he proposed that Baohang International explore direct flights between China and Miri, citing the city’s strategic location and proximity to attractions such as Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah National Park.
Meanwhile, Zhu shared plans to explore a future Shanghai to Kuching route, which Lee said could further strengthen business and investment ties between Sarawak and China.
According to a press statement, the minister was also informed of potential cooperation between Baohang International and AirBorneo to support the airline’s future expansion into the Chinese market.
Lee reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening international air connectivity and positioning Sarawak as a gateway to Borneo and the wider ASEAN region.
