KUCHING: Sarawakians should remain united behind Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to safeguard political stability, economic growth and the state’s long-term development agenda, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.

As the next state election approaches, he observed that several politicians and aspiring candidates from Peninsular Malaysia-based parties have become increasingly active within local communities.

“Sarawakians should ask a simple question: Why are they only active now? If they were genuinely committed to serving the people, their presence and efforts would have been visible throughout the year, not only when an election is approaching,” he said in a press statement on Wednesday (June 10).

Yap said the people deserve representatives who consistently engage residents, local councils and government agencies to resolve issues rather than appearing only during election periods.

He stressed that voters should carefully evaluate whether parties headquartered outside Sarawak fully understand the state’s unique aspirations, challenges and development priorities.

According to him, Sarawak’s political journey has always been distinct, with its strength rooted in unity among diverse communities and leadership focused on state interests.

“The political culture that has produced instability, political infighting and frequent changes of government at the federal level is not something Sarawakians should import into our state,” he said.

Yap noted that while Peninsular-based parties were occupied with political manoeuvring, GPS concentrated on strengthening the economy, increasing state revenue and advancing Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He said Sarawak has emerged as one of Malaysia’s strongest-performing economies through investments in free tertiary education, healthcare accessibility, renewable energy and digital infrastructure.

“These achievements were made possible because Sarawak has enjoyed political stability and a government focused on development rather than political drama,” he added.

Referring to Kota Sentosa, Yap said residents could clearly distinguish between political rhetoric and actual delivery through infrastructure upgrades, Rural Transformation Projects projects and community assistance programmes.

He maintained that real progress requires commitment, persistence and cooperation, adding that GPS focuses on solutions, serves throughout its term and remains accountable solely to Sarawakians.

Yap urged the people to continue supporting Sarawak-based leadership, saying the state’s future should be determined by Sarawakians and guided by stability, development and unity.
