SIBU: A total of 186 active blood donors will receive special recognition in conjunction with the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) 2026 celebration organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu Branch in collaboration with Sibu Hospital at Kingwood Hotel here on June 14.

Organising chairperson Dr Rachel Teng Li Cin said that this year’s celebration is themed “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives”, which emphasises the importance of blood donation as a humanitarian practice that can save lives.

According to her, the recognition ceremony is the highlight of the programme to appreciate the commitment of blood donors who have consistently contributed to Sibu Hospital’s blood supply throughout the past year.

“Donors who have reached 10 pints of blood and every additional five pints thereafter will receive a special certificate of appreciation as a sign of recognition of their contribution to the community.

“We sincerely apologise for not being able to recognise all blood donors at once due to the large number of donors. However, we would like to assure that all regular blood donors will be duly recognised in different years during the Annual WBDD Celebration Ceremony,” she said at a press conference on Wednesday (June 10).

Apart from appreciating blood donors, Dr Teng, who is also Sibu MRCS vice-chairperson, stated recognition would also be given to the blood donation campaign organisers who actively organised donation programmes to ensure that Sibu Hospital’s blood stock is always at an adequate level.

The celebration, starting at 8am at Level 5, Rinwood Hall, Kingwood Hotel, will also feature various health and community activities, including a Blood Donation Campaign with a target collection of 150 pints of blood.

Each donor who successfully donated blood will receive a certificate of appreciation from the MRCS National Headquarters.

At the same time, the public will have the opportunity to participate in various health awareness programmes such as organ donor registration, mental health awareness, sexually transmitted disease awareness, infection control, free glucose and cholesterol checks, bone scans, muscle strength tests, mobility tests, physiotherapy and the “Know Your Medicine” campaign.

To encourage the involvement of families and the younger generation, Dr Teng aded that a colouring competition will also be held involving 58 children aged between nine and 12 with the support of Sibu Hospital, Sri Minyak Group and several Lions clubs in Sibu.

Also present at the press conference was Sibu MRCS chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee.
