KUCHING: Efforts to encourage more people to become regular blood donors received a boost through a blood donation campaign held in conjunction with World Blood Donor Day 2026.
The campaign which took place on Wednesday (Jun 10) at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Blood Bank was organised by the Kuching Love Book Association and Lai Lee Beauty & Slimming Centre Sdn Bhd.
The campaign aimed to raise awareness on the importance of blood donation while helping to maintain adequate blood supplies for patients in need of transfusions.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who was at the venue of the campaign, met and thanked donors for their contribution towards saving lives through voluntary blood donation.
He commended the public who came forward to donate blood, describing their contribution as crucial in ensuring hospitals have sufficient blood stocks to meet ongoing demand.
Accompanying him was blood transfusion medicine specialist Dr Nur Hidayah Zahari, who highlighted the role of community-driven campaigns in promoting greater public awareness and participation in blood donation efforts.
She noted that such initiatives not only help strengthen hospital blood reserves but also foster a spirit of volunteerism, compassion and community solidarity.
The SGH Blood Bank also conveyed its appreciation to the organisers for spearheading the campaign and providing refreshments and souvenirs to eligible donors as a token of appreciation.
Meanwhile, the organisers expressed hope that similar initiatives would continue to be held to cultivate a stronger culture of blood donation and ensure a stable blood supply for patients across the state
