SARIKEI: Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, has approved basic amenities and fire extinguishers for several longhouses following community outreach visits across the constituency.

Huang, who is also Sarikei Member of Parliament and Repok assemblyman, said residents had raised concerns over inadequate community facilities and fire preparedness during engagements with several longhouse communities.

In a statement today (June 11), he said requests for essential items such as chairs and tables were approved immediately to support community activities and enhance residents’ comfort.

“Basic necessities such as chairs and tables may seem minor, but they make a meaningful difference to residents’ comfort and quality of life. We will not overlook such needs,” he said.

Fire safety was also identified as a major concern, particularly in longhouses that are largely constructed from timber and house multiple families under one roof.

To help mitigate the risk, Huang approved the provision of fire extinguishers for the longhouses visited, enabling residents to respond more effectively during emergencies and reduce potential losses.

“Residents’ safety remains our priority. Fire extinguishers are the first line of defence and should be available in every longhouse. We cannot wait for a tragedy to happen before taking action,” he said.

He stressed that fire prevention requires a collective effort, urging residents to remain vigilant and adopt safe practices in their daily lives.

Huang added that his longhouse outreach programme has been carried out consistently since he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Sarikei, allowing him to better understand and address local needs on the ground.

The latest visits covered longhouses in Sungai Gemuan, Sungai Kelupu, Sungai Apong, Sungai Janting, Sungai Stubah and Sungai Kabu, where residents shared their concerns and outlined development priorities for their communities.
