KUCHING: The celebration of Parents’ Day through locally composed songs reflects the importance of family appreciation, cultural expression and unity among Sarawak’s diverse communities, says Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
Yap said parents play an invaluable role in shaping individuals through their unconditional love, care and sacrifices.
“Our fathers and mothers have raised us, cared for our daily needs and shown concern for our growth and development. They have given selflessly without expecting anything in return.
“Therefore, we should always carry a grateful heart, respect our parents and cherish our families,” he said when officiating the Celebrating Parents’ Day with Locally Composed Songs event at the Hui Sing Garden Community Welfare Association Hall here today (June 14).
He said a harmonious family remains the foundation of a stable society, while music serves as a universal language that bridges differences in race, culture and religion as Sarawak’s strength lies in its diversity, with communities including the Chinese, Malays, Ibans, Bidayuhs and others living together in mutual respect and harmony.

“This unity is Sarawak’s most valuable asset.
“No matter our backgrounds, we are all Sarawakians. As long as we continue to uphold the spirit of inclusivity, respect and cooperation, Sarawak will continue to progress and prosper,” he said.
Yap also called for continued support for local songwriters and artists, saying original songs showcase Sarawak’s rich cultural identity and creative talents.
