BETONG: Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) members have been urged to maintain the current leadership to ensure the union’s stability and continued progress.

STU president Kullin Djayang said the existing leadership had worked hard to make STU one of the country’s leading public sector unions.

He said the union would continue to safeguard members’ welfare while grooming young teachers and members to ensure leadership continuity.

“At this year’s triennial delegates conference (TDC), we hope members will continue to support the present leadership for the stability and well-being of the union.

“All key STU leaders must remain committed, be prepared to work hard despite their teaching responsibilities and stay close to the headquarters in Kuching, where many urgent matters involving agencies and ministries need to be handled,” he said.

He said this when officiating the STU Betong Division annual general meeting at St Augustine Secondary School, Betong on Sunday (June 14).

Kullin said STU was actively identifying and mentoring young teachers through various programmes and leadership camps to ensure the union’s long-term sustainability.

He also called on members in Betong to actively support the newly appointed committee members, describing them as active and proactive leaders.

“As teachers, STU members enjoy various welfare benefits, including accident insurance coverage of up to RM100,000, affordable insurance schemes and bereavement assistance for immediate family members.

“We also provide legal advice, educational incentives for members’ outstanding children, long service awards and retirement gifts,” he said.

Kullin said STU would continue to protect members’ welfare, including matters related to salaries, allowances and suitable leave entitlements for teachers.

“We want STU to continue to be led by honest and principled leaders so that the union remains free from issues that could affect its standing with the Department of Trade Union Affairs.

“STU belongs to all its members across Sarawak and should not be led by individuals with personal interests,” he said.

Also present were STU Betong chairman Ister Jimbai and vice-president Willies Unjie Ganyai.
