KUCHING: Sarawak industries must adapt their manufacturing processes to meet global green standards, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said Sarawak is in a strong position to capitalise on the growing demand for sustainable products due to its abundant renewable energy resources, but industries must ensure that their entire production process is environmentally friendly.

“As you know, the European Union is proposing a levy. If your product is not produced through a green process, then there is a penalty.

“In other words, the cost and price will be higher because you have to pay the levy. But if your product is green, you do not have to pay that levy,” he said in his speech during the launching of the SWG Green Complex and Decarbon Hub here today (June 15).

He said possessing green energy alone is no longer sufficient, as industries must also adopt cleaner technologies and sustainable production methods to ensure their products qualify as green products in the global market.

He cited the steel industry as an example, saying manufacturers must not only use renewable energy but also ensure that the entire production process complies with green requirements.

“Even in manufacturing steel, you have to adopt the right technology. Your energy may be green, but the production process must also be green.

“Once your steel becomes green steel, it attracts a premium and the market is yours,” he said.

He said green-certified products are becoming increasingly important as financial institutions and investors are more inclined to support industries that align with global sustainability goals.

He added that companies that successfully transition to green manufacturing would gain a competitive advantage and enjoy easier access to financing.

Abang Johari said Sarawak is fortunate to possess both renewable energy resources and the technological potential needed to support the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

However, he stressed that industries must be prepared to transform their operations and embrace new technologies to remain relevant in an increasingly sustainability-driven global economy.
