LATEST local horror film ‘Khadam’ enjoyed an impressive start at the box office, grossing RM1.2 million since opening in cinemas last Thursday and emerging as the top-performing title nationwide.

The strong opening reflects continued audience appetite for fresh, high-quality Malaysian horror productions. It also signals a growing shift in viewing habits, with local films increasingly holding their own against international releases screening at the same time.

Since its debut, social media has been flooded with reactions, reviews and praise from moviegoers and industry figures, many describing director, Shamyl Othman’s latest work as a new benchmark for Malaysian horror cinema.

The film has also earned accolades from some of the country’s most respected industry veterans.

Renowned filmmaker, Erma Fatima, praised ‘Khadam’, describing it as a film that strikes all the right notes, while actress, Sofea Jane, commended the quality of its screenplay.

“My longing for good writing has been fulfilled with ‘Khadam’,” she said.

Producer Red Communications expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from Malaysian audiences, describing it as the driving force behind the film’s RM1.2-million box-office achievement.

‘Khadam’ follows Melur, a mute mother who is forced to inherit a mystical entity, or saka, from her own mother. In her quest to protect her children, she must confront the supernatural force, which assumes the form of an idealised version of herself while demanding an enormous sacrifice in return.

The film stars Remy Ishak, Aghniny Haque, Siti Khadijah Halim, Karl El and Zarra Zhaff, with a special appearance by Jun Lojong.
