KUCHING: Residents of Taman Sri Emas along Stapok Utama Road in Batu Kawa can look forward to improved drainage facilities as a RM266,530 upgrading project is currently underway to address long-standing drainage issues in the area.
The project, approved under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS) programme, was secured following an application by Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian after residents raised concerns through the N14 Batu Kawa Service Centre.
The existing drainage system had not undergone major improvements for many years, resulting in severe deterioration in several sections, which affected water flow and drainage efficiency.
Following complaints from residents, the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) carried out site inspections, prepared the project design, and estimated the cost before the application was submitted for approval.
Construction began on June 5 and is expected to be completed by Sept 11.
According to a press statement, MPP is responsible for implementing the project, including its design, cost estimation, tender process, and supervision, with the current phase focusing on upgrading the main drainage channels within the housing area.
As the existing drains are heavily damaged, the project requires full excavation and reconstruction of the affected drainage lines.
Residents may experience temporary inconvenience, particularly with vehicle access and daily movement, during the construction period.
The public is urged to cooperate throughout the duration of the works, while the contractor is expected to complete the project according to schedule so that residents can benefit from a safer and more efficient drainage system.
