KUCHING: Sarawak’s rapid progress in artificial intelligence (AI), energy development and sustainable economic growth has attracted the attention of the United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to ASEAN.

Leading the delegation, UK Member of Parliament and UK Trade Envoy to ASEAN, Naz Shah, said Kuching was the first destination on her inaugural visit to Malaysia, and her experience in Sarawak had left a highly positive impression.

“I am truly inspired by the technological advancements, AI development, energy planning, leadership and Sarawak’s ambitious vision for the future.

“The beauty of this state is remarkable, and its people are incredibly welcoming. I hope Sarawak continues to succeed in all its development agendas,” she told a press conference after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.

Meanwhile, another member of the delegation, Muddassar Ahmed, said the visit followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both parties in Manchester recently.

According to him, the purpose of the visit was to discuss the implementation of the MoU and gain a deeper understanding of the remarkable progress achieved by Sarawak, particularly in the fields of AI and energy.

“Today’s courtesy call follows our visit to Manchester with the Premier of Sarawak, which also involved a group of British officials and parliamentarians. During our time in Manchester, we signed an MoU, and today we had the opportunity to discuss its implementation with the Premier.

“In particular, we discussed the progress Sarawak has made in artificial intelligence, as well as the extraordinary developments achieved by the state in the energy sector,” he said.

He also described Abang Johari as a visionary leader who consistently promotes talent development and innovation.

He added that the Premier was among the most impressive leaders he had encountered throughout his involvement in various international engagements.

“I have met many world leaders, but he is among the most impressive leaders I have ever met. He strongly encourages talent development and always takes a long-term view when planning for development,” he added.
