KUCHING: Education remains one of the most important investments in building Sarawak’s future, with young people encouraged to seize opportunities in higher education, skills development, and emerging industries to prepare themselves for the state’s continued growth.

Batu Kitang assemblyman, Datuk Lo Khere Chiang, said the Sarawak Government’s strong emphasis on education reflects its commitment to developing local talent capable of leading the state in the years ahead.

“Sarawak believes in investing in our people because you are our greatest asset. We have good leaders today, but we want even stronger leaders tomorrow, and they are going to come from you,” he said when officiating the Sarawak Government Career Expo and Education Exhibition at SUPP Headquarters today (June 20).

Lo noted that Sarawak’s strong financial position and continued infrastructure development are creating growing demand for skilled professionals across multiple sectors, ranging from engineering and construction to finance, healthcare and technology.

He said investments in roads, bridges and other development projects have created opportunities for consultants, architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, and other professionals while generating wider economic benefits for communities.

According to him, young people should keep an open mind when exploring their future career paths and choose fields that align with both their interests and industry demands.

“Do something that you like because if you enjoy that particular career or pathway, you will do well in it. At the same time, look at what is relevant in the market today, whether it is artificial intelligence, construction or other growing industries,” he said.

Lo also described education fairs as an important platform for students to gain exposure to available opportunities and make informed decisions about their future.

He urged participants to engage with exhibitors, ask questions, and explore the various courses, scholarships and career options on offer.

Meanwhile, he reminded students that success is not determined by their background, but by their willingness to learn, discipline, character and perseverance.

“Talent alone is not enough. Discipline, character, perseverance and a willingness to learn are equally important. Never stop learning because education is something that nobody can take away from you,” he said.
