SIBU: A local motorist was fined RM6,000 here Monday (June 22) for driving recklessly, resulting in a collision that left a motorcyclist injured.

Peter Tie Yew Hao, 29, admitted to an amended charge under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 when the case came up before Magistrate Oon Kork Chern.

The court ordered him to pay a fine of RM6,000 or serve 12 months’ imprisonment in default.

The court also ordered that the conviction be endorsed on his driving licence pursuant to Section 43(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The accident occurred at about 4.26pm on Nov 2, 2025, at the traffic light junction of Jalan Merdeka and Persiaran Brooke.

Investigations revealed that Tie was driving from Jalan Merdeka towards the Persiaran Brooke traffic lights while motorcyclist Wong Chung Tieh was travelling from Persiaran Brooke towards Bukit Aup.

Upon reaching the junction, Wong proceeded when the traffic signal on his lane turned green.

However, Tie’s vehicle entered the intersection despite the traffic light on his lane showing red and struck the motorcycle.

The impact caused injuries to the motorcyclist, who was subsequently rushed to Sibu Hospital by ambulance.

A police investigation later concluded that the accident was caused by the Tie’s failure to exercise reasonable consideration for other road users while driving.

He was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 and imprisonment of up to 12 months upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Keshava Rao Tharma Raja appeared for the prosecution.

Tie opted to pay the fine.
