THE creator of the Star Wars franchise, George Lucas, has joined the voice cast of Illumination’s upcoming animated feature, ‘Minions & Monsters’, in what will be one of his rare on-screen performances.

The news was confirmed by Illumination founder and chief executive Chris Meledandri, who revealed that Lucas accepted the offer after the studio created a role specifically for him.

“I had the privilege of meeting George about two years ago, and what led to that meeting was how much he loves Illumination films, particularly ‘Despicable Me’ and, even more specifically, the Minions,” Meledandri said.

“It was a thrill to discover that and then share it with the team, because he is someone the entire studio respects enormously.”

According to Meledandri, the idea of involving Lucas was raised during discussions with director Pierre Coffin and the film’s creative team, who immediately embraced the suggestion.

“We’re thrilled to have him in the film,” he said.

“I saw him recently, and he’s already talking about the role he wants to play in the next Minions movie.

It’s pretty incredible.” Industry reports indicate that Lucas will voice an animated version of himself in the film, having recorded his dialogue in Paris.

Directed by Pierre Coffin, ‘Minions & Monsters’ is the latest instalment in Illumination’s hugely successful ‘Despicable Me’ franchise.

The film follows the Minions as they attempt to make their own monster movie in 1920s Hollywood, with predictable chaos ensuing.

The voice cast also features Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Allison Janney and Christoph Waltz.

The film is scheduled for release on July 1, 2026.

Lucas, 82, has largely stayed away from Hollywood productions since selling Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012.

In recent years, he has focused on developing the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, making his appearance in ‘Minions & Monsters’ a surprising and welcome return to the entertainment spotlight.
