KUCHING: A 20-year-old boy was ordered to perform 60 hours of community service by the Bau Circuit Court here today for publishing his former girlfriend’s personal information on social media with the intention of causing her harassment.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan issued the order after considering the probation report from the Social Welfare Department (SWD).

He pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 507E of the Penal Code for publishing the personal information of a 16-year-old girl with the intention of causing harassment.

Section 507E of the Penal Code provides for imprisonment of up to three years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Although the accused was charged under Section 507E of the Penal Code, the sentence was imposed pursuant to Section 293(1)(e) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593), where it empowers the court to sentence a youthful offender to a Community Service Order (CSO) instead of imposing a fine or a prison sentence.

The offence was committed at about 6:00 am on April 6, at a house in Lorong Cahaya Permai, Samariang Aman.

The court heard that the victim, a Form Five student of a secondary school, became acquainted with the accused through Telegram in December 2025, and the pair later entered into a relationship.

In January 2026, the victim decided to end the relationship with the accused after the accused found out that the victim had another boyfriend.

On April 6, the victim discovered that a Threads account operating under the username “mir_rr4” had uploaded her photograph together with her personal information, including her full name, home address and school, without her consent.

She believed the account belonged to her former boyfriend and asked him to remove the post, but he refused.

Police arrested the accused at a house in Samariang Aman on April 8, and seized an iPhone 11 Pro together with a SIM card.

Investigations revealed that the mobile phone contained login records linked to the Threads account used to publish the victim’s information.

The accused admitted he had created a fake Instagram account linked to Threads on April 5, following the breakdown of their relationship.

He further admitted that between 8:00 am and 9:00 am on April 6, while travelling in his father’s car, he uploaded posts containing the victim’s personal information, allegations about debts, and comments regarding her relationships because he was dissatisfied with her.

Although he later deleted the Threads and Instagram applications, the offending post remained online.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani, whereas the accused was unrepresented.
