Miri man jailed, fined over illegal World Cup football betting

MIRI: A 22-year-old local man was sentenced to three days’ imprisonment and fined RM2,500 by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to operating an illegal football betting activity linked to the FIFA World Cup 2026.

He admitted to an offence under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The court heard that police raided an unnumbered premises along Jalan Lusut at about 4.10 pm on June 23 after receiving a tip-off.

During the operation, officers uncovered an illegal betting operation involving FIFA World Cup 2026 matches.

Police seized RM29 in cash and an iPhone 15 Pro Max, both believed to be linked to the offence.

In a statement, Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said police would continue to take firm action against illegal gambling activities under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

He said illegal gambling remained a priority enforcement area and warned that those found operating or participating in unlawful betting activities would face legal action.

Police also urged the public to continue providing information on illegal gambling and other criminal activities to support enforcement efforts.
