SIBU: Strong collaboration between the government and local communities remains the cornerstone of sustainable rural development, said Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

He said rural development requires close cooperation between elected representatives, government agencies and local residents to ensure development initiatives are responsive to the people’s needs.

He was speaking at the launch of the K.A.W.A.N. Programme organised by the Community Communications Department (J-KOM) Sibu Parliamentary Office at Rumah Unjah Sg Melanggan at the West Bank here Saturday. (June 27)

Wong described the programme as an important platform for strengthening two-way communication between the government and the people.

He said the programme is one of J-KOM’s community outreach initiatives aimed at strengthening government-public engagement through effective communication, accurate dissemination of information and greater community participation in the nation’s development agenda.

“In today’s rapidly evolving information landscape, it is essential that the public receives accurate and credible information so they can better understand the government’s policies, development plans and future direction,” he said.

The programme was attended by officers from J-KOM Sibu Parliamentary Office, community leaders, the Rumah Unjah Village Committee and residents from the surrounding areas.

Highlighting the needs of rural communities, Wong said infrastructure development remains a priority, particularly in improving road connectivity, ensuring reliable water and electricity supply, expanding internet access, enhancing educational facilities and creating greater economic opportunities.

“My priority is to ensure that rural communities are not left behind in the state’s development agenda and that they enjoy the same opportunities and essential services as other areas,” he said.

He also encouraged young people to seize opportunities in entrepreneurship, modern agriculture, the digital economy and other emerging industries, describing them as key drivers of future economic growth and higher household incomes.

Touching on the next Sarawak State Election, which is expected to be held in the near future, Wong expressed hope that voters would continue supporting leaders who remain close to the people, listen to their concerns and consistently champion development for their communities.
