GEDONG: Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from algae in Gedong could potentially power AirBorneo’s aircraft in the future, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
He said algae is among the emerging renewable resources that can be processed into oil, including aviation fuel.
“Algae can be processed to produce oil, including jet fuel.
“If we are able to produce it, AirBorneo could one day use fuel produced in Borneo, perhaps even from Gedong.
“These are the kinds of new technologies we are pursuing,” he said in an UKAS report during the Ngiling Bidai Gawai Dayak celebration 2026 held at Kampung Keniong Jaya on Monday (Jun 29).
Meanwhile, Abang Johari also called on PETROS to study the potential for natural gas resources in Gedong following the discovery of gas emissions during construction works in the area.
He said similar occurrences had also been recorded in Lawas, suggesting the possible presence of natural gas deposits underground.
“Whenever we construct buildings in Gedong and carry out piling works, gas is often released. The same situation has also occurred in Lawas.
“This indicates that there is likely natural gas beneath the ground,” he said.
