KUCHING: The inaugural Malam Amal Legends Charity Dinner is expected to boost tourism in Miri while celebrating the contributions of Malaysia’s legendary music artistes, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said the event, scheduled to take place at the Pullman Waterfront Hotel in Miri on July 4, reflects Sarawak’s commitment to supporting the performing arts and positioning the state as a premier destination for cultural tourism.

Speaking at a press conference, he said the charity dinner would bring together some of Malaysia’s most iconic performers alongside Sarawakian artistes in a celebration of the country’s rich musical heritage.

“The event not only honours our legendary artistes but also showcases the strong collaboration between performers from Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, reflecting the richness of our shared cultural heritage.”

Among the artistes scheduled to perform are Datuk Zainal Abidin, Datuk Khatijah Ibrahim, Datuk Ramli Sarip and Datuk Jamal Abdillah, together with several renowned performers from Sarawak. The event will run from 6.30pm to 11pm.

Abdul Karim welcomed collaborations of this nature, expressing hope that the charity dinner would become the first of many major entertainment events to be hosted in Sarawak.

He said Miri, which already attracts visitors from Brunei Darussalam and neighbouring regions, stands to benefit from increased tourist arrivals generated by events of such scale.

“An event of this magnitude will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to Miri’s tourism economy and contribute positively to Sarawak’s overall economic growth.”

He also called on the corporate sector to support the charity initiative, describing Malaysia’s veteran artistes as individuals who have dedicated their lives to enriching the nation’s music industry.

Abdul Karim commended Persatuan Karyawan Malaysia, particularly its chairman Datuk Khatijah Ibrahim and president Datuk Freddie Fernandez, for bringing the event to Sarawak.

He expressed hope that the partnership between Persatuan Karyawan Malaysia and its Sarawak counterparts would pave the way for more world-class entertainment productions and strengthen the state’s aspiration to become a leading destination for culture, performing arts, and tourism.
