THE Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’ has become the highest-grossing biographical film in cinema history, overtaking Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ at the global box office.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael has earned around US$977 million worldwide since its release in April, narrowly surpassing Oppenheimer’s global total of about US$976 million.

The film is also closing in on the US$1 billion milestone.

The film had already made history earlier this month by overtaking ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to become the highest-grossing music biopic ever.

It also set a new record for the biggest domestic opening weekend for a music biopic, taking in US$97 million in North America and surpassing the previous record of US$60 million set by 2015’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’.

‘Michael’ follows Jackson’s journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his rise as the King of Pop. It stars Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in his acting debut as the late singer.

The cast also includes Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Miles Teller and Laura Harrier.

The screenplay was written by John Logan, whose previous credits include ‘Gladiator’ and ‘The Aviator’.
