KUCHING: AirBorneo Airways (AirBorneo) was established not merely to operate flights, but as a strategic component of Sarawak’s long-term development agenda, with improved connectivity seen as a key enabler of economic growth, tourism and regional integration.
Chairman Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki said the airline was conceived under the vision of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, recognising that Sarawak’s geographical location on the island of Borneo makes air connectivity essential for the state’s continued development.
He said unlike destinations connected by extensive road networks, Sarawak depends heavily on air travel to link its people with Peninsular Malaysia, neighbouring countries and international destinations.
“The aspiration for AirBorneo is the brainchild of the Premier, as we envisioned having better connectivity between Sarawak and other parts of the world. Sarawak is on the island of Borneo, we cannot be connected by road or other means.
“Of course, there is sea transport, but to be more efficient, we need to have our own airline to connect ourselves with Peninsular Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia,” he said during the AirBorneo media roundtable here on Wednesday.
While several commercial airlines already operate in the state, Abu Bakar said the establishment of AirBorneo reflects Sarawak’s aspiration to strengthen its own connectivity and better support the state’s long-term priorities.
He stressed that the airline’s role extends beyond carrying Sarawakians to destinations elsewhere but also expected to encourage more visitors to experience what Sarawak has to offer.
“This airline is not only meant to serve Sarawakians travelling to other parts of the world. We also want people from outside Sarawak to come here.
“Sarawak has plenty to offer, and it is important for us to establish direct connectivity,” he said.
Abu Bakar said improved air connectivity is an essential part of the wider ecosystem required to position Sarawak as a regional economic hub.
“In order to achieve this, we must have the whole ecosystem, and one of the important components is connectivity. This is one of the reasons AirBorneo was established,” he said.
He added that while AirBorneo is still in its early stages, the airline represents an important milestone in strengthening Sarawak’s transport infrastructure and supporting the state’s future economic ambitions through improved accessibility for business travellers, tourists and investors.
